Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his first trophy for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

Medvedev, a ex- number one, has experienced a difficult period, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a meltdown at the US Open.

The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - resulted in him falling of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with long-term coach Cervara.

Currently training with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought three-set triumph over opponent Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's maiden championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hard court from March of 2023.

Success also signifies he has secured twenty-one victories at twenty-one different competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a competition with my children at once, so to secure a championship is particularly special," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I got when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had failed in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching play style and recurring reactions on the playing surface had prompted some to question if his skill to compete at the elite level was concluded.

However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the past month, attempting to advance forward and perform positively, reinforced by an enhanced service.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky Frenchman, taking 4 of the final five points to take the lead.

The pair swapped breaks in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his initial ATP Tour title, seized the initiative to push for a final set.

The opponent saved 4 initial chances in a tight third set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he secured the title with a point at the net, with Moutet incapable to handle a shot after a lengthy match.
