The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
