This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
